We made a thing! DEEP: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us About Ourselves, by James Nestor

Deep Book cover For the last two years or so I’ve been working as a scientific and historical researcher with James Nestor on his amazing new book, DEEP. During the course of writing it, James learned to freedive, swam with sperm whales, and took a submarine to the bottom of the ocean, among other adventures which he recounts in riveting detail.

Along the way I had the privilege of helping him keep his facts, word choice, and grammar straight. I was delighted and humbled to discover that on page 235 of the book, he honored my contribution with a sweet — and funny — paragraph of thanks.

Released on June 24, 2014, the book has since received rave reviews from many quarters, including The New York Times and Scientific AmericanKirkus Reviews called it “An adventurous and frequently dazzling look at our planet’s most massive habitat.”

High praise indeed, and well deserved. Congratulations, James! It was a wild ride and I enjoyed every minute of it.
